AI Files Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1 Is AI a vector file?

Yes. AI is the most common vector file used in print media and digital graphics, such as logos. It uses mathematical formulas or algorithms, such as curves, lines, and text, to create and store images.

Yes, you can use AI files in InDesign, but there is no direct method to convert or fully edit AI files within InDesign. Instead, users can place the AI file into InDesign as a graphic, but the vector elements within the AI file will not be editable in InDesign.

AI files are more detailed and versatile than EPS files, supporting advanced features like layers and transparency. While EPS files are older and larger, they offer wider compatibility across various platforms. AI files are generally smaller due to efficient compression, making them ideal for modern design workflows when storage space is a concern. EPS files, on the other hand, are better for cross-platform sharing and printing. Therefore, choosing between the two formats depends on the user's priorities.

AI files are exclusive to Adobe Technologies, while SVG files are XML-based, which means users can edit them using image editing programs and text editors. AI files are easily corrupted with other opening or editing programs bar for Illustrator. Users must convert them to the more edit-friendly SVG file types supported by almost all major browsers. Many people prefer SVG due to the increasing demand for highly scalable and web-responsive image formats.

PNG files are better than AI files in terms of compatibility and use in web environments. The PNG file type is a widely supported raster image format, compatible with most web browsers and software, making it ideal for sharing and displaying images online. On the other hand, AI files are a vector-based format exclusive to Adobe Illustrator. They support layers, scalability, and advanced editing features, which PNG files cannot. Therefore, PNG is better for sharing and broader accessibility, and AI files are superior for editing and preserving high-quality, scalable designs.

One can make AI files smaller by compressing them. Adobe Illustrator gives you the Save Option, which allows users to compress AI files as explained below:

  1. Open your AI file in Illustrator
  2. Go to File > Save > Save As.
  3. In the dialogue box, untick the Create PD compatible File and tick Use Compression.
