What is RAW?

RAW files are files that contain unprocessed data created and captured using a digital camera’s sensors. They ensure a high level of image detail and lossless quality. Before using RAW files, they must be imported into appropriate software for editing or exporting as a different raster image file, such as PNG or JPG.  RAW is often called ‘digital negative’ because it constitutes the ingredients of a photo needed for processing to produce a picture’s full potential.

.AVIF

What is AVIF?

An AVIF file format is a royalty-free, raster graphics and open-source file format that uses the AV1 video codec. The lossless and lossy compression techniques apply the video codec encoding to create small, high-resolution, and high-quality images. The compressed AVIF images save bandwidth and increase website responsiveness or decrease webpage loading time while sharing qualities similar to the original image. The .AVIF file extension has inherent features that support transparency (alpha channel) and animation. AVIF files are visually impressive and comparatively smaller than traditional formats such as WEBP, PNG, and PNG.

Why Convert RAW to AVIF?

One of the advantages of AVIF is its strong support in modern web browsers and various software applications, ensuring that images can be widely accessed with minimal compatibility issues. AVIF uses lossy and lossless compression, significantly reducing file size while maintaining high image quality, making it ideal for web use. The main disadvantage of RAW files is their large size and specific use case for professional editing, as they store unprocessed data from a camera sensor. This makes RAW files unsuitable for direct use on the web due to their lack of compression and optimization features. Therefore, converting RAW images to AVIF can significantly reduce file sizes and improve web performance.
