PEF (Pentax Electronic File) is a raw image file format used by Pentax digital cameras. PEF file types contain unprocessed data directly from the camera's image sensor, allowing for greater flexibility and control during post-processing. PEF files capture the image as seen by the camera's sensor without color adjustments, compression, or loss of detail. They store key information such as color temperature, exposure settings, and sensor data. PEF files retain more detail and dynamic range than compressed image formats like JPG; this gives photographers greater control over edits like white balance, exposure, and color grading in post-production.
JPG is also called JPEG, which stands for Joint Photographic Expert Group. JPG file format is known for its ability to reduce the file size of an image while maintaining a reasonable level of quality, making it easier to share and store digital images. This is achieved through a lossy compression process, which discards some of the data in the original image. JPG file type is famous for photographs and web graphics because it balances file size and image quality.
To convert files from PEF to JPG use an online tool that supports mass conversion, like Convertjack. Such a tool transforms single or bulk images at once to save time.
Go to Choose File, and select any PEF photos you want to convert. If you want to do a bulk conversion, click Choose File and select all the PEF pics you want to convert.
After uploading the PEF image, click the “Select Format” button at the center. A drop-down menu will pop up; select JPG.
On the bottom right corner of the display, click the “Convert” button. Your converted JPG file will be ready for download.
Click the “Download” button on the right side of the JPG file, and the converted image will be downloaded. If you convert multiple files, each file will have a “Download all” button in front of it, and you can click each button to download all the converted files.
To save a PEF file as a JPG file, you first convert it to JPG and then download it.
Instead of converting a file manually from PEF to JPG, use an online tool like Convertjack to convert the file without losing any details.
After converting the PEF file, Download the JPG file and save it in the default folder for all your downloads on the desktop or mobile.
One of the advantages of JPG is its ability to compress images into smaller file sizes, making it ideal for sharing, quick access, and web use. The main disadvantage of PEF is its large file size, as it stores uncompressed raw image data, including all the details necessary for high-quality editing and post-processing. This makes PEF files more challenging to share and store, especially when space or bandwidth is limited. Therefore, converting PEF images to JPG is beneficial when smaller file sizes are needed.
