What is DWG?

DWG stands for “Drawing”. It is a proprietary binary file format for storing two- and three-dimensional design data and metadata. It allows users to create detailed drawings and designs for products, machines, and buildings. The DWG file contains all the information needed to describe the shape, dimensions, annotations, and metadata of the designed objects. DWG format is compatible with many 3D drawing and CAD programs, making it easy to transfer drawings between programs.

.DXF

What is DXF?

The Drawing Interchange Format (DXF) is a CAD data file format developed by Autodesk to enable data interoperability between AutoCAD and other software. It is used by engineers, designers, architects, and other professionals to store and exchange both 2D and 3D design data. DXF format can store detailed vector graphics information, including metadata, making them suitable for sharing complex design information across different CAD systems. Unlike DWG, DXF is an open standard, facilitating broader accessibility. A DXF file can be saved in either ASCII or binary formats, with the ASCII version being larger but more readable and easier to debug. However, due to their detailed nature, DXF file types can be relatively large and less suitable for web applications than compressed formats.

How to convert DWG to DXF

To convert files from DWG to DXF use an online tool that supports mass conversion, like Convertjack. Such a tool transforms single or bulk images at once to save time.

STEP 1: Upload DWG file to convertjack

Go to Choose File, and select any DWG photos you want to convert. If you want to do a bulk conversion, click Choose File and select all the DWG pics you want to convert.

STEP 2: Select "DXF" under the "Convert to" column

After uploading the DWG image, click the “Select Format” button at the center. A drop-down menu will pop up; select DXF.

STEP 3: Click the "Convert" button at the bottom

On the bottom right corner of the display, click the “Convert” button. Your converted DXF file will be ready for download.

STEP 4: Download DXF Image

Click the “Download” button on the right side of the DXF file, and the converted image will be downloaded. If you convert multiple files, each file will have a “Download all” button in front of it, and you can click each button to download all the converted files.

How to save DWG as DXF

To save a DWG file as a DXF file, you first convert it to DXF and then download it.

STEP 1: Convert DWG to DXF using a tool

Instead of converting a file manually from DWG to DXF, use an online tool like Convertjack to convert the file without losing any details.

STEP 2: Download the converted file and save on PC

After converting the DWG file, Download the DXF file and save it in the default folder for all your downloads on the desktop or mobile.

Why Convert DWG to DXF?

One of the advantages of DXF is its use as an open standard for 2D and 3D technical drawings, allowing easier interoperability between different CAD systems. The main disadvantage of DWG is that it is a proprietary format, which may not be as easily accessible in non-AutoCAD applications. Converting DWG to DXF is necessary when sharing CAD drawings with users of other CAD programs, as DXF offers better compatibility across platforms.
